The best family vacation isn't one-size-fits-all. Here's how to pick the right destination based on your kids' ages — from toddlers to teens.

One of the biggest mistakes families make when booking a vacation is choosing a destination that doesn't match where their kids actually are developmentally. A toddler and a teenager need completely different trips. Here's how to match your destination to your family — by age.

Ages 2–5: Toddlers & Preschoolers
Kids this age need short travel times, familiar characters, sensory-friendly environments, and flexibility for naps and meltdowns. Top picks: Walt Disney World, Beaches Resorts (Turks & Caicos or Jamaica), a beach resort close to home.

Pro tip: Toddlers won't remember the trip, but YOU will. Choose somewhere relaxing for the adults too.

Ages 6–10: The Sweet Spot Years
Old enough to remember everything, young enough to still think you're cool. Top picks: Universal Orlando (Epic Universe now fully open — huge draw for this age group), San Diego, Washington D.C., National Parks (Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Zion).

Ages 11–14: Tweens
Involve them in planning. Top picks: New York City, cruise vacations, Costa Rica, Cancun all-inclusive.

Ages 15–18: Teens
Think experiences over theme parks. Top picks: European city trip, adventure destinations, cruises, all-inclusive resorts with watersports.

ADHD TIP: For families traveling with ADHD kids or adults, look for built-in structure and stimulation — theme parks, cruises, and all-inclusives work well because the environment is predictable and engaging. Avoid long unstructured days and build in intentional downtime.
